The Holiday Season can be extremely stressful for so many of us (including me).

There is so much going on. Purchasing gifts (expensive) catching up with family you may not have seen in months, parties, shopping, cooking, cleaning and more. So how do you cope with Holiday Stress and possible depression during this time?

Keep the following tips in mind throughout the Holiday Season to make it more enjoyable.

Acknowledge your feelings

It’s ok to feel stressed and anxious. Nobody can force you to be happy just because it’s Christmas.

Ask for help

If you are spending Christmas alone, reach out to your community. Offer to volunteer where you are most needed. This will give you a sense of wellbeing and provide you with new friendships.

Create new traditions

As families grow up, traditions will often change. Be open to creating new traditions.

Set a budget and stick to it

Decide in advance how much you can afford to spend. Designate a certain amount per person and stick with it. Alternatively, try making some homemade gifts. It’s cheaper and more heart felt and personal.

Plan ahead

Being organised will take away a lot of stress. Don’t leave your Christmas shopping till the last minute. Plan gifts, menus and make up your shopping list well in advance.

Give thanks 

Be grateful and give thanks for all of your relationships (parents, siblings, partners  and friends). Make time for them. Meet up with them for a coffee. Give them a call  just to say “hi”. Show your loved ones how you feel (hug them, laugh with them). Do  your best to set aside any ill feelings on the day.

Make sure that you take time for self care. 

Don’t abandon your healthy habits. Continue to eat well, exercise and get plenty of sleep. If heading out to a party, eat a healthy meal before going. This will prevent you from eating too much heavy food or alcohol.

Take time out if you need to.

It’s not considered weak if you need to take a break. Go for a walk, get a massage, take a bath. Doing what you need to will ensure your sanity remains intact.

Seek help if you continue to fell hopeless or anxious

Remember, your health should always be your number one concern. YOU are number one. Seek professional help if you need it.
